The Challenge To substantially extend and renovate a dilapidated 19th century cottage. The existing cottage has been unused for 10+ years.
The Solution A new modern 2 storey extension was added to the west side of the cottage via a cube form stone cladded link creating a new courtyard type entrance. The narrow plan form of the extension integrates well to the traditional proportions of the existing cottage. A new coloured metal roof replaces the existing slate roof of the cottage. Solar shading elements within the design have been finished in the same coloured metal cladding. The use of these modern materials gives a nod back to the red corrugated cladded farm sheds that once occupied the area where the proposed new extension will now sit.
